The Opportunity

This role is based in the Trustworthy Systems Group which is based within the School of Computer Science and Engineering. The Trustworthy Systems Group is a research group that performs world-leading work on software systems whose trustworthiness can be mathematically proved. As the Computer Systems Support Officer you will provide system and web administration services to the group.


This role reports to the Senior Consultant and has no direct reports.


  • Salary
    • Level 5 - $77,356 to $87,532 per annum + 17% superannuation
    • Level 6 - $90,566 to $96,613 per annum + 17% superannuation
  • Full time or Part time
  • Fixed-term contract – 12 months
  • Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia

Skills & Experience:

Level 5

  • An honours degree or equivalent in IT or a related discipline, or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
  • Highly self-motivated and ability to learn new technologies quickly
  • Willingness to comply with EEO and WHS standards.
  • Experience in maintaining and configuring Linux systems, networks and firewalls
  • Experience with scripting languages, especially Python and Bourne Shell
  • Experience with Linux build environments and revision control systems (especially Mercurial and Git)
  • Experience with configuring web servers and proxies
  • Effective interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Experience in the following is desirable but not essential:
    • Debian and Ubuntu
    • Embedded ARM platforms
    • PERL programming
    • Postgres, openLDAP, Apache2, NGINX, bind9, isc-dhcpd, exim4
    • Building and deploying cross-compilers

Level 6 (in addition to the above)

  • Experience in several of the following:
    • Debian and Ubuntu system management
    • Installing operating systems on embedded ARM platforms, platform bring-up
    • PERL programming
    • Experience using Postgres, openLDAP, Apache2, NGINX, bind9, isc-dhcpd, exim4
    • Building and deploying cross-compilers
    • Analysing, diagnosing and fixing network performance issues
    • Detecting and defending network denial-of-service attacks
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently and be responsible for working project timelines.
  • A demonstrable track record of project work experience in professional system administration.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and solve diverse and unusual problems.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
